Vietnamese New Year

As Chinese New Year, Tet is the popular name for the Vietnamese New Year (Vietnamese: Tết Nguyên Đán). It occurs on the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar. This usually translates to last January or early February on the Gregorian calendar. In 2014 Tet will be on January 31.

12 zodiac animals symbolize the years : rat, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig. These animals turn through 12-year periods. Each animal has a variety of strong points and weak points that they are considered to pass on to any person born in their year.

Tet has a very important meaning to each Vietnamese. This time is chance for everybody to come back to their hometown, get together with family, seeing relatives and having a good stress-free time after a busy-working year. If you have the opportunity to visit Vietnam during Tet holiday, make sure you feel happy moments of Vietnamese.

Preparations for Tet begin 1 month ago. Every new year is  a chance for people to begin anew and be more prosperous than they were in the last year.

Many families refurbish their houses in the weeks leading up to Tet, creating even busier to the already active streets of Vietnam. If a house isn’t renovated it is at least completely cleaned. New garments are bought to mean a new change, bring blessed for everybody

There always certain many varieties of food that come to be preferred around Tet, but the most popular of which are banh Tet, banh Chung and banh Day. These are comprised of rice with meat or bean fillings tightly wrap inside a leaf, and are the most essential traditional Tet foods.

In the week before Tet towns and cities over the country put together flower streets, and families arranged flower displays in front of their homes.

For the duration of this period Vietnam’s streets increase with color and give a sense of vitality before the start of the new year.
